Airbnb has announced that its AI-driven customer support system is now managing about one-third of support inquiries in the United States and Canada. The company is planning to expand this technology globally. Airbnb aims for AI to handle over 30% of customer support queries worldwide, in all languages where they currently have human support. CEO Brian Chesky, during the company's recent earnings call, expressed confidence that this move will not only cut costs but also significantly enhance service quality. Chesky implied that AI could outperform humans in resolving certain issues.
The company highlighted its strategic hiring of CTO Ahmad Al-Dahle, an AI specialist formerly with Meta, to spearhead this initiative. Under Al-Dahle's leadership, Airbnb plans to develop an enhanced AI-driven app tailored to user preferences. Chesky explained that this app would assist guests in planning their trips, aid hosts in managing their properties, and improve operational efficiency.
Chesky praised Al-Dahle's expertise, citing his extensive experience at Apple and Meta, where he led the development of generative AI models. This expertise is seen as crucial for transforming the Airbnb experience.
Airbnb's leadership emphasized that its vast proprietary data sets it apart from other AI solutions. Chesky noted that a generic AI chatbot lacks access to Airbnb's 200 million verified identities and 500 million exclusive reviews. Additionally, he mentioned that a large percentage of guests communicate directly with hosts, a feature unique to Airbnb.
Airbnb predicts revenue growth in the "low double digits" this year, following a strong fourth quarter that exceeded expectations. Chesky dismissed concerns about AI platforms entering the short-term rental market, asserting that Airbnb's comprehensive services, including insurance and user verification, provide a strong competitive edge.
He further noted that AI chatbots function similarly to search engines, driving high-conversion traffic. Airbnb is already integrating AI into its search capabilities, experimenting with conversational search features and planning to add sponsored listings.
In contrast to Spotify, which reported reduced coding by its developers due to AI, Airbnb revealed that 80% of its engineers currently utilize AI tools, with plans to increase this to 100%. This highlights Airbnb’s commitment to integrating AI across its operations.
