Nvidia is reportedly on the brink of investing $30 billion in OpenAI, as reported by Reuters, citing a source with insight into the situation. This substantial investment is part of a larger funding round where OpenAI seeks to amass over $100 billion, potentially valuing the company at approximately $830 billion. Such a valuation would establish it as one of the most significant private fundraising efforts ever recorded.
Alongside Nvidia, other notable participants in this funding round include SoftBank and Amazon. OpenAI intends to allocate a major portion of the newly acquired funds to purchase Nvidia chips, which are essential for the training and deployment of its artificial intelligence models.
According to the Financial Times, this investment supersedes a previous agreement announced in September. That deal involved Nvidia committing up to $100 billion to facilitate OpenAI's chip usage for data centers. However, the finalization of that agreement took longer than anticipated, leading to the current revised terms.
