Pinterest Ranks Among Top Search Platforms, Surpassing ChatGPT in Search Volume, Amidst Earnings Miss

Pinterest CEO Bill Ready recently highlighted the platform's impressive search capabilities, surpassing even the popular AI tool ChatGPT. Despite underwhelming fourth-quarter financial results, Ready emphasized Pinterest's strength as a search destination. He cited third-party data showing Pinterest handles 80 billion searches monthly, ahead of ChatGPT’s 75 billion, alongside generating 1.7 billion monthly clicks. Ready noted that over half of Pinterest's searches are commercial, significantly more than ChatGPT's estimated 2%.

The disappointing financial report saw Pinterest miss projections, with $1.32 billion in revenue against an expected $1.33 billion, and earnings per share at 67 cents instead of the anticipated 69 cents. Looking ahead, the company projects first-quarter 2026 revenues between $951 million and $971 million, falling short of the $980 million forecasted. The company attributed these shortfalls to reduced spending by major advertisers, particularly in Europe, and challenges from a new furniture tariff introduced in October, which impacted the home category.

This financial strain comes despite a faster-than-expected growth in Pinterest's user base, which rose 12% year-over-year to 619 million, surpassing Wall Street’s forecast of 613 million. However, these positive user metrics did not prevent a 20% drop in Pinterest’s stock during after-hours trading.

Facing the evolving market landscape, particularly the shift towards AI-driven platforms, Pinterest is focusing on its visual search and personalization tools to enhance user experience and drive commercial searches. Ready pointed out that their partnership with Amazon has streamlined the checkout process, which could support their commercial strategy.

Ready expressed optimism about the platform's ability to guide users through shopping experiences without needing typed prompts. He also addressed the potential future where AI could facilitate purchases directly, indicating Pinterest is prepared to adapt when consumers embrace such technology.
